Phoenix is on Fire, 2004
Exploring the fabric of what makes up “Phoenix,” Sale collaborated with artist Cyndi Coon to conduct a performance art/research project focusing on more than 500 area businesses and organizations that feature “Phoenix” as the first word in their name. They contacted them all, with the goal of conduct 117 live interviews. They sought out artistic justification for each decision they made, for example, the target 117 interviews represented the highest temperature for Phoenix the year the project was conducted.
This project gave Sale and Coon the opportunity to be unusual visitors throughout the greater Phoenix community. For a final exhibition they presented a series of accordion-style tourist postcards that represent their survey questions, identifying patterns in responses, and highlighting a few unexpected findings, and mailed out more that 2000 sets of cards to local participants and community stakeholders.
The temporary public art/research project was commissioned by the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture, Phoenix, AZ
